"Huh? Another new drug on the streets?"

Not exactly, but serious the same. The culprit - technology.

Here's a sample, and some healthy hints to prevent this from transforming into a big problem.

I have an acquaintance that may be easy prey for almost any salesman with the newest techno-gadget available on the market. His home is filled on the rafters with electronic doodads.

His newest purchase is the newest and best phone on the market. It has, literally, all of the bells 'n whistles. It's his "right hand" and usually in the right hand. He lives through the American Express slogan of "Don't set out without it".

What does it do?

It is often a phone, does text messaging, is a planning tool, contact database, camera, and does what my computer does, and much more. It has unique ringers and vibrate modes for each and every function so my pal knows if they are receiving a phone call, text message, picture, or whatever else he can receive.

The one thing it does not do is build effective relationships. Instead, celebrate a state of scattered instant gratification and urgency.

I've held it's place in the same room with this gentleman in meetings, restaurants, along with his family.

When his phone rings or vibrates, he turns all of his attention to it. He ignores the people around him, and relates to his phone call or text message. When he finishes and enters into the conversation, he will produce a statement or ask a question that is totally out from context, and often an element that has just been discussed.

The folks with him provide him that curious, head-cocked-to-the-side, eyebrow-raised look, meaning "Where the *$&! were you?"

By his actions, they are giving a loud message to the people around him. The unspoken message is always that those in-person relationships are certainly not as important as the tele-marketer, dry cleaner, or person selling a less-than-reputable website, who thrives on the other end with the air waves.

His obsession with his tool is destroying his relationships, anf the husband doesn't seem to be consciously conscious of it. The word "tool" is mentioning the phone - get those mind out of the gutter.

Let's look at both sides of the addiction and the way to keep it from ruining your lifestyle.

Have you become hooked on technology to the point where it controls you, as opposed to the other way around?

Here are healthy hints to stop the addiction:

o Use the education. That is the reason you have them. These technologies have been designed with a message system that can assist you simplify your life. Enjoy the privilege of obtaining the option to use them.

o TURN It away. Consciously stop just before entering a meeting with other sites and turn the power off - not vibrate, totally off.

o Focus on the people in your presence. There're more important than anything else right now. Treat all of them with respect and dignity, as you desire to be treated. From your actions, show them you are totally present, mentally and physically.

o Check your messages later, within your space, away from personal interactions.

o Reply to voice or texts as soon as possible, in a professional, respectful manner.

Do you understand people who are Techno-junkies? Help them the following:

o ASK them politely to turn their phone off when moving into a meeting or discussion. The important thing word is ASK. For those who tell them to turn it off, they may tell you to go to - somewhere hot - and yes it won't be Phoenix.

o Assure them that you value their abilities, knowledge, creativity, and co-operation.

o Acknowledge them for their attention and presence.

o Thank them with regards to dedication and time.

We are in a fast-paced, high-tech world. Technology is comparatively cheap, and easily replaceable. Utilize available tools, but be cautious about becoming addicted to them. The effects can be as destructive as drugs. Carefully monitor your time and efforts that is consumed by e-mails, calls, and web surfing.
