5. Raising Arizona

A criminal falls excited about the police officer who takes his mugshot, and after realising they won't have children together, choose to steal a baby off their neighbour, who they think has too many babies already. This is a timeless story really. Nicolas Cage will be the hapless offender wanting to not fall into his own ways, while Holly Hunter is his honest, broody wife prepared to break the law to be a mother. Both characters have much heart that their madcap antics seem almost justified, and small-town America is the best backdrop to the madness. Despite its small budget, Raising Arizona was successful within the box office, and stays a favourite to this day.

4. Burn After Reading

Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand are friends employed as personal trainers at a gym. Poor Frances is lonely and thinks she needs surgical treatment to attract a man. They find the opportunity to blackmail the CIA out of some money, unaware of the amount of trouble they're gonna cause. This pitch black comedy also stars John Malkovich, George Clooney and Tilda Swinton in roles you have not seen them in before. All loose ends are tangled up by the end of the movie, and all characters face realistic consequences for actions. The Coen brothers have produced a memorable and unsystematic plot with this 2008 movie, having an excellent cast and intelligent dialogue.

3. The important Lebowski

Who doesn't know 'The Dude?'  Jeff Bridges will be the uber-laidback Lebowski who finds himself the marked of criminals who've mistaken him for another person. Thus the serial slacker plots his revenge, fantastic him to meet a rich guy with the same name as him. The millionaire's sexy young wife is kidnapped, as well as it up to The Dude to mend it. Queue a number of hilarious unpredicted events to occur, and an unforgettable movie exists. This 1998 movie boasts an extraordinary cast including John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Tara Reid and Philip Seymour Hoffman, as well as its film score was composed by Carter Burwell (The place that the Wild Things Are, Twilight). It had not been an instant success for any Coen brothers, but soon became a cult classic along with a must-have for comedy fans.

2. Fargo

William H Macy works as being a car salesman in rural Minnesota. He finds himself in financial trouble, so plots to acquire his wife kidnapped and held at ransom by the couple of thugs he knows in Fargo, North Dakota. He's hoping his father-in-law will pay up the cash and that he'll get his hands on some, thus digging himself not in debt. Surely nothing could go wrong? Well, actually, a great deal goes wrong. Meanwhile Frances McDormand is actually a pregnant cop investigating murders that happened her town of Fargo, and she slowly puts the bits of the puzzle together. This 1996 crime comedy drama is compelling to see and a fascinating guidance for the human condition. The time will you go for something you require? What drives men to such desperate measures? A television spin-off of the same name was filmed, but cancelled following the pilot. Edie Falco played the role of Marge Gunderson. I doubt she had the Minnesota accent as perfect as McDormand, though.

Josh Brolin is Llewelyn Moss, a hunter who finds two million dollars in profit a briefcase within the scene of a murder. He's coping with a trailer park along with his wife Kelly MacDonald in a tiny town in Texas. He needs money, but does he need very much? Apparently yes. Thus begins a cat and mouse chase between him and Javier Bardem, an unsympathetic and eternally merciless hitman deliver to track down the money, that is following Llewelyn and getting closer and much better him. All the while sheriff Tommy Lee Jones senses that his hometown ain't just what it used to be and worries for any fate of Llewelyn. Adapted from Cormac McCarthy's book of the identical name, this movie carries an essential moral message: do not take on what's not yours! Unlike another Coen movies, No Country is consistently ominous, devoid of humour, and in many cases has a minimal music score, therefore the barren landscapes and imperfect characters give rise to the moody, atmospheric tone.
